AUSTRALIAN ORIGINS
Rod Hardy was raised in Fitzroy and Collingwood, two inner-city migrant suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. This early life in such a diverse and often intense cultural landscape was to shape Hardy’s narrative lens, and inform his style as an up and coming director on gritty drama series for landmark Australian TV company, Crawford Productions. Having honed his directorial skills at Crawfords, Hardy became a dedicated storyteller on a prolific slate of Australian miniseries and episodic dramas, making him a key figure in Australian screen history. A driven director who consistently has pushed boundaries to explore the complexities of life, Hardy’s early career success is a testament to his own tenacity as a boy from Fitzroy.

Rod took a leap of faith and relocated to Los Angeles, aiming to expand his directing career. Immersing himself in the vibrant Hollywood scene, his unique storytelling ability and seasoned experience shone through as his break through film showcased his ability to tell real-life stories with authenticity and respect. He continued directing movies of the week for prominent US television studios and soon found himself working with top-tier talent, including future 007, Pierce Brosnan, in a feature version of Daniel Defoe’s classic Robinson Crusoe. He skilfully adapted this classic tale, along with other pieces of American literature, for the screen to the delight of American audiences. These experiences underscored Rod's versatility and his capacity to work with high-calibre talent, solidifying his status in the US Television industry.
MASTERING THE EPICS
Rod's directorial career reached new heights when he worked on the epic miniseries Buffalo Girls, a fictionalized account of Calamity Jane's life, brilliantly brought to life by Oscar Winner Anjelica Huston. Rod's keen eye for authentic storytelling resonated in every frame, making this complex female historical figure truly memorable, garnering Emmy and SAG nominations.
Continuing his journey through classic literature, Rod then helmed the adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starring British actor Michael Caine as Captain Nemo. The award winning feature film December Boys significantly underscored the transformative power of cinema, stirring audiences with a potent cocktail of nostalgia, camaraderie, and heartwarming human connection.The film was Daniel Radcliffe's first project outside of the Harry Potter franchise, allowing Rod to showcase the actor's versatility. Rod used the stark contrast between the desolate Australian Outback and the vibrant seaside to paint a vivid picture of the characters internal journeys. us PRIME TIME success
